THERE IS A STEERING GROUP AND DEDICATED TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS WHICH FREELY GIVE THEIR OWN TIME TO CREATE A FITTING GATEWAY TO THE HISTORIC TOWN OF CHRISTCHURCH FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL.
Work Completed Under the Memorandum Of Understanding
The project is being implemented in several phases. The first phase, now completed, started the process to provide a more suitable gateway to Christchurch and its historic attractions. Under this phase, a twinning sign was erected to welcome visitors from twin towns and 14 new planters and 3 refurbished planters finished with floral arrangements at the entrances to the station and on the platforms were provided by FCS with funding from Dorset Strategic Partnership. SWT refurbished the benches on the platforms, upgraded the lighting on and around the station, provided vests for FCS volunteers and painted the railings around the car park. They also cleared away dense shrubbery and undergrowth along the station entrance road, to ensure that it did not provide shelter for those who might be a threat to passengers or the station environment.
In addition to the work done under Phase I of the project, FCS has:-
Conducted weekly visits to the station, completed and submitted 5 Station Inspection reports to the Station Manager to follow up
Alerted South West Trains of instances of damage, vandalism and disrepair to the station and its environment in order to arrange for rectification.
Suggested improvements to the seating, lighting and ideas for overall benefit of customers using the station.
Conducted litter picks.
Replenished and maintained the plants at the station.
Provided two colourful Window Boxes on the entrance façade of the Station building.
Made available simple gardening tools, hoses, hose trolleys and tap connections to facilitate plant maintenance.
Ensured toilet signage was clearly visible from both sides of the Station.
Hosted ‘Coffee Mornings’ at the station to encourage local residents to visit the rejuvenated station, showing off the floral display and raising awareness of rail travel.
